The Challenge

Battery condition is the biggest open question in any used EV or hybrid transaction. Buyers want to know how much range is left, whether the pack has been damaged, and how likely it is to fail early. Dealers want proof that supports the asking price. Neither side has had a quick, standardized way to answer those questions on the lot.

The product had to work across many makes and model years, each with its own battery management system and connector quirks, and it had to finish in the time a dealer is willing to spend on an inspection. That meant pairing a plug-in diagnostic device and a mobile app with a web platform that turns raw battery data into a report a non-technical buyer can read.

What We Built

vsNEW combines a proprietary diagnostic device, a mobile data collection app for iOS and Android, and a dealer web platform. An inspector plugs the device into the vehicle's diagnostic port, follows the prompts in the app, and the system reads battery management system data within about two minutes, regardless of the battery's temperature or charge level.

We built the dealer-facing web platform on Next.js with a Node.js backend running on AWS. It handles accounts and multi-rooftop user management, plan and report quotas, and the report viewer dealers share with buyers. Higher-volume plans add API access and website integration so reports can appear directly on a dealer's own vehicle listings.

Each report answers the three questions buyers ask: current range, signs of physical pack damage, and the risk of premature failure. Scores draw on cell voltage and temperature readings, charging history, storage patterns, and internal resistance, checked against a database of similar vehicles.

Key Features

  • Two-minute battery test

Plug the vsNEW device into the diagnostic port and read battery management system data in about two minutes, at any temperature or charge level.

  • Three-part battery score

Capacity and degradation, premature failure risk, and physical pack damage are assessed from BMS data and combined into a single vsNEW score.

  • Mobile data collection app

Available on iOS and Android. The device needs no pairing or configuration, and the app walks the inspector through each step of the test.

  • Dealer web platform

Manage reports, users, and multiple rooftops from one account, with month-to-month plans and per-report pricing after the included quota.

  • API access and website integration

Higher-volume plans can pull reports into dealer websites and other systems through the vsNEW API.

  • Broad vehicle coverage

Supports over 95 percent of EVs and hybrids on the road today across 18 brands, with model-year coverage listed on the vehicles page.

Outcomes

  • Battery health reports are produced in about two minutes per vehicle.
  • Coverage of more than 95 percent of EVs and hybrids on the road today, across 18 brands.
  • In use by dealers and inspectors across North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia.
  • Designed and manufactured in the USA, with patents pending.
