The Challenge
Corporate insiders must disclose their trades on SEC Form 4 within two business days, and members of Congress file their own disclosures. The data is public, but it arrives as thousands of raw filings with no context. Knowing that an executive bought shares says little unless you also know how that insider's past purchases performed and how the trade compares to others.
We set out to make that history usable: parse the filings continuously, rank every insider buy with a consistent score, and present the results in a web app that works for an individual investor scanning a daily list as well as a trading firm pulling data into its own systems. Everything had to stay current with new filings and remain fast on large tables of historical trades.
What We Built
Trading Town is a React single-page application backed by a REST API at api.tradingtown.space. The platform sources its data directly from SEC Form 4 filings, covering officers, directors, and 10 percent owners, alongside congressional trading data with background information and a track record for each trader.
Every insider buy receives a score from 1 to 10, where a lower score indicates a better trade. The ranking weighs the size of the trade, the change in ownership it caused, the insider's previous buy transactions and their win rate, and how many insiders bought the same stock in the past 12 months. Win rates are based on one-year stock return after the purchase, and the model is based on an analysis of over 100,000 insider trades made over eight years.
Interactive dashboards built with ApexCharts show daily and weekly top insider buys, 30-day leaderboards, per-stock and per-insider profiles, and portfolio performance. A daily morning insider buy report is delivered at 8:30am Eastern, and subscribers can pull the same data through the REST API or a real-time WebSocket feed.
