Data Security

Practical application and cloud security for businesses that handle customer data.

Data security is the set of controls that keep customer records, payment details, and internal systems out of the wrong hands. In practice it means secure code, correctly configured cloud accounts, tight access control, encrypted data, tested backups, and a plan for what happens when something goes wrong.

You need a security review when you store personal or financial data, when a customer or partner asks for your security posture in a questionnaire, or when you are preparing for a compliance framework such as SOC 2 or HIPAA. A review is also wise after rapid growth, when configurations drift and access lists go stale.

We focus on controls that reduce real risk rather than on paperwork. The same discipline protects SpamBurner, which processes contact-form submissions and lead data for the sites it serves. Our engineers review code, cloud settings, and processes together, because attackers do not respect the boundaries between them.

What's Included

  • Application security review

Code and architecture review against the OWASP Top 10, covering authentication, input handling, session management, and dependency risks.

  • Cloud configuration hardening

Audits of AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud accounts for open storage, overly broad permissions, missing encryption, and unmonitored resources.

  • Access control and identity

Role-based permissions, multi-factor authentication, single sign-on, and offboarding processes that close accounts when people leave.

  • Data protection and encryption

Encryption at rest and in transit, key management, secrets handling, and retention policies that limit how much sensitive data you hold.

  • Backup and incident planning

Tested restore procedures, logging, alerting, and a written response plan so an incident is handled rather than improvised.

  • Compliance preparation

Gap assessments and technical controls for SOC 2, HIPAA, GDPR, and customer security questionnaires.

How a Data Security Engagement Works

  1. 01

    Scope and threat model

We identify what data you hold, where it flows, who can reach it, and which threats are realistic for a business of your size.

  2. 02

    Assessment

Code, infrastructure, and processes are reviewed and tested, with findings rated by severity and likelihood.

  3. 03

    Remediation

We fix the issues ourselves or guide your team through them, starting with the ones that carry the most risk.

  4. 04

    Verify and maintain

Fixes are re-tested, monitoring is put in place, and a periodic review schedule keeps the posture from decaying.

Data Security FAQ

Do you perform penetration testing?
We perform application and cloud security assessments that include automated scanning and hands-on testing of your own systems, with your written authorization. For a formal third-party penetration test that a compliance auditor requires, we help you scope the engagement, prepare the environment, and remediate findings, working alongside a specialist testing firm if one is needed.
What does a security review cost and how long does it take?
A defined assessment of one application and its cloud environment is quoted as a fixed price after a scoping call. Remediation and ongoing monitoring are billed on time-and-materials or as part of a support package. Duration depends on the size of the codebase and the number of cloud accounts, so we give you a dated plan with the quote.
How does a security engagement work with our developers?
We start with a threat model built together with your team, then review code and infrastructure with read-only access you grant. Findings are delivered in a report rated by severity with specific fixes. Your developers can apply the fixes with our guidance, or we can make the changes ourselves through pull requests your team reviews.
Can you help us pass a SOC 2 or HIPAA audit?
We handle the technical side: access control, encryption, logging, backups, vulnerability management, and the evidence that proves these controls exist. We also advise on policies and work with your auditor or compliance platform. What we do not do is act as the auditor, so you still need an accredited firm to issue the final report.
Is a small business really a target?
Yes. Automated attacks scan every public server and login page regardless of company size, and small businesses are often targeted precisely because they have fewer defenses. Most incidents we see come from exposed credentials, outdated dependencies, and misconfigured cloud storage, all of which are inexpensive to fix compared with the cost of a breach.
